A prize-winning documentary - First released in 1975, Herbert Chappell’s highly acclaimed BBC TV documentary is the story of a remarkable journey made by the composer and explorer David Fanshawe which inspired his celebrated and innovative work African Sanctus. This second film (1995) revisits the original BBC film and combines excerpts from the recorded performance, by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Choristers of St George’s Chapel, Windsor, with soprano soloist Wilhelmenia Fernandez, conducted by Neville Creed.

African Sanctus is a visionary work which expresses unity between diverse peoples, their faiths and their music. It is a testimony to the rich heritage of world music and has become a landmark in our musical lives. The work has been performed over 2,000 times in over 30 countries.

Poignant images and original footage spanning his 20 years of travel in Africa. This film retraces Fanshawe’s musical steps up the river Nile and features many of the original musicians he first recorded in 1969. Fanshawe himself explains the ethos behind his work and the process of composition. The film also introduces Fanshawe`s Dona Nobis Pacem - A Hymn for World Peace. (NOTE: this is not a film of a performance)
